Novlr Review 2026: A Simple Novel-Writing App Worth Trying?

Novlr is a browser-based writing app for novelists who want a calm, distraction-free place to draft, track goals and talk to other writers. This Novlr review comes down to one verdict: it's worth trying free if you write on several devices and don't want AI anywhere near your manuscript, but it's the wrong tool for heavy planning, long offline stretches or one-time-payment shoppers.
Choose Novlr if you want simple chapters, streaks and community. Choose Scrivener if you want a deep, offline, pay-once desktop tool for a big, complicated book.
We haven't run a hands-on test for this piece. What follows comes from Novlr's own pricing pages, help center and changelog, plus Scrivener's official store and support pages, with independent reviews used as context only.
Novlr review: what it is
Novlr describes itself as the only creative writing platform part-owned by the writers who use it. In plain terms, it's a web app: there's nothing to download, and all you need is a browser on any device.
It's closer to a writer-friendly word processor than a project-management suite. You split a manuscript into chapters and sections, write in a focus mode, and watch your word counts and streaks. If you like Google Docs but wish it understood novels, you're in the right neighbourhood.
Key features
Writing space, notes and planning
The editor has a fullscreen focus mode. Novlr also lists notes and world-building tools, plus a note-powered planning grid for outlining a project.
It's useful, but it isn't a full planning tool. Independent reviewers list basic planning tools and limited formatting among its weak spots. If you plot with timelines and character arcs, you will want a dedicated planning tool such as Plottr.
Goals, sprints and community
This is where Novlr earns its keep. The pricing page's feature comparison lists writing sprints, streaks and habit building. The Starter plan adds full Academy courses, the Community, writer discounts and The Reading Room.
One wrinkle: Novlr's own pages disagree on where goals sit. The help center says the Free plan includes goals and streaks, while the pricing card lists goal-setting under Starter. Check the plan comparison when you sign up.
Offline use
Novlr doesn't have a desktop app. When your connection drops, it switches to offline mode and stores your work locally in the browser, then syncs when you reconnect. You do need to have opened the app online first, per the help center, which says you can keep working after dropping connection if you opened it with an active internet connection.
Here's the catch. Novlr itself doesn't recommend using it offline for long periods. That makes it fine for a patchy train connection and a poor choice for a week in a cabin.
Export and backups
Novlr's help center lists DOCX, ODT and RTF export. EPUB export sits on the Studio plan, along with optional Google Drive and Dropbox integrations. Check the live export menu for PDF. Whatever you choose, export a Word copy regularly and open it to check the formatting. That's good practice with any cloud-only tool.
For print-ready interiors you'll still want a formatting tool. Our book formatting software guide covers the options.
No AI, by design
Novlr's help center says it has no AI built into the platform, which it says keeps your work safe from AI scraping. Sharing options are optional and controlled by you. If that matters to you, it's a genuine selling point.
Novlr Sites
Novlr includes a no-code author website builder. Every account can draft a site and preview premium themes, but publishing, premium themes and custom domains need Novlr Sites or a Studio plan. It suits a simple home page, book list and newsletter link. If you want a full site with a blog and more control, read how to make an author website.
Pricing
All prices below are in USD, taken from Novlr's pricing page as of October 2026. The page advertises a 20% saving for yearly billing, so monthly billing costs more. Confirm the exact monthly rate at checkout.
- Free: 2 projects, no limits on chapters or words, goals and streaks (per the help center), and focus mode.
- Starter: from $8/month (as of October 2026), billed yearly, with 10 projects, 30-day version history, goals, streaks, full Academy access and the Community.
- Studio: from $16/month (as of October 2026), billed yearly, with unlimited projects and version history, Novlr Sites, Google Drive and Dropbox backups, EPUB export per the help center, and a built-in proofreader and advanced grammar and style checker.
- Lifetime Studio: $499 once, everything in Studio. It includes co-ownership of Novlr.
- Novlr Sites on its own: from $5/month billed yearly, or $60/year (as of October 2026). The main pricing page also lists $6/month.
A second wrinkle: the help center says Starter offers unlimited projects, but the pricing page says 10. Treat 10 as the safer number.
Here's the long-run maths using the yearly rates. Starter over three years is $288. Studio is $576. Scrivener is a one-off purchase, so a subscription can't win on price if you stay for years. The $499 lifetime option beats Studio after roughly 31 months, if you're confident Novlr will be around.

Novlr vs Scrivener for long projects
Scrivener is the obvious comparison, and our Is Scrivener worth it review goes deeper. Short version: they solve different problems.
Scrivener is a one-time-purchase tool with a corkboard, outliner and research library, built for long, structured projects. It costs $59.99 once for macOS or Windows and $23.99 for iPhone and iPad, per a September 2026 price check. The trial lasts 30 days of use.
Scrivener has its own friction. Each licence covers only one platform, and the iOS app's built-in sync works only through Dropbox. There's also no Android app.
| Novlr | Scrivener | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Browser (any device) | macOS, Windows, iOS/iPadOS |
| Price | Free; from $8/month (Starter, as of October 2026) | $59.99 one-time per desktop platform |
| Offline | Short sessions only | Fully offline desktop app |
| Planning depth | Notes and plot grid | Corkboard, outliner, research folder |
| Learning curve | Light | Steeper |
| Community | Built in | Not built in |
For a 100,000-word novel with simple structure, Novlr is usually enough. For a series bible, a heavily researched non-fiction book or lots of restructuring, Scrivener wins. Try Scrivener's free trial if you're leaning that way. If you're still comparing options, our best writing software for authors roundup lays out the field.
Who it is for
- Novelists who draft on a laptop, a tablet and sometimes a phone
- Android and Chromebook writers, since Scrivener has no Android app
- Writers who want streaks, sprints and a community nudging them along
- Anyone who wants a no-AI workspace with a written policy behind it
- Beginners who find Scrivener intimidating
Who should skip it
- Offline-first writers. No desktop app, and long offline sessions are discouraged.
- One-time-payment buyers. Scrivener's $59.99 licence is cheaper over time.
- Heavy planners and series writers. The plot grid and notes won't replace a full planning setup.
- Writers who want AI drafting help. Novlr has none. Sudowrite, covered below, is one AI option.
- Formatting-heavy projects. You'll need separate book formatting software.
Alternatives
- Scrivener: best for big, complex manuscripts and offline work. Pay once.
- Sudowrite: a different category, an AI fiction tool. It has no free plan, only a trial that needs no card. Plans are from $10/month on annual billing (as of October 2026), with tiers at $10, $22 and $44, or $19, $29 and $59 billed monthly. Read our Sudowrite review before you pay. It's the opposite of Novlr's philosophy.
- Dabble and Ulysses: two other writing apps worth comparing if you want something between Novlr and Scrivener.
FAQ
Is Novlr free?
Yes, there's a free plan. It includes 2 projects with no limits on chapters or words, goals and streaks, and a distraction-free focus mode. Paid plans add more projects, longer version history, EPUB export and extras. Check Novlr's pricing page for current limits, as its pages vary slightly.
How much does Novlr cost?
As of October 2026, Starter is from $8/month and Studio from $16/month, both billed yearly. Lifetime Studio is $499 once. Novlr Sites alone is $60/year. Monthly billing costs more than the yearly rate. Novlr charges in US dollars and your card provider converts the amount, so confirm the final price at checkout.
Does Novlr work offline?
Partly. If you go offline, Novlr stores your work locally in the browser and syncs when you reconnect. You must have opened the app online first, and Novlr doesn't recommend long offline stretches. If you regularly write without internet, use a desktop app such as Scrivener.
Does Novlr use AI?
Novlr says it doesn't. Its help center says AI isn't built into the platform, so your work stays accessible only to you and out of reach of AI scraping. Sharing options exist but are optional. Check the privacy policy and changelog before relying on this, as features can change.
Is Novlr better than Scrivener?
Neither is better outright. Novlr is simpler, browser-based and community-driven, with a subscription. Scrivener is deeper, works fully offline and costs $59.99 once per desktop platform. Pick Novlr for easy drafting across devices, and Scrivener for complex, research-heavy or very long projects.
Can I export my book from Novlr?
Yes. Novlr's help center lists DOCX, ODT and RTF export, and EPUB export comes with Studio. Check Novlr's export menu for PDF support before you commit. Open each exported file to check formatting before you submit or publish. Our self-publishing guide covers what to do next.
